Why Choose Tasman Gymnastics Club?

Tasman Gymnastics Club has been operating for over 11 years in the Nelson Tasman area.

No other sport includes all 7 fundamental movement patterns, (spring, landing, locomotion, rotation, statics, swing and manipulative skills).

Weight bearing sports increase bone density, stronger bones reduce the risk of injury and osteoporosis later on in life.

Gymnastics improves posture, strength & flexibility, burns calories and works all of your muscles.

Gymnastics improves balance and coordination and crosses mid-lines, developing both side of the brain, building neural pathways.

Gymnastics increase self esteem, by using positive feedback and encouraging  ideas to improve.

Children develop skills which will help in all other sports.

Most of all it's great fun and you make new friends!

  • Class Information Open or Close

Baby gym for 10 months to 3 year olds

Sessions are for crawlers to 3 yr olds. They allow children to explore the equipment at their own place. Bright colours, different textures and a relaxed atmosphere encourage parents, caregivers and children to have fun together. There will be songs with actions and activities to encourage the development of eye tracking and fine motor skills.

Play gym for 2 ½ to 5 year olds

This is a more structured class than the tumble tots. The class starts with a group warm up activity, after a brief explanation of the circuits, children are able to have 5 or 6 turns on each circuit before moving around to the next group of apparatus. Focus is on taking turns and following instruction, we cross mid-lines and develop neural pathways in the brain. Parent/caregiver participation is required for this class.

Gym Fun for 5 to 8 yr olds

Perfect for beginners or gymnasts who are a little out of practice. Each week the class focuses on building strength and flexibility. Cartwheels, handstands and backward rolls will be developed, plus the gymnasts get time on the apparatus which include the bars, rings, beam, vault and tumble track.

Gym Minis for 7 to 10 years

Dive rolls, walkovers and one-handed cartwheels will be some of the floor moves we will be working towards, along with the vault, beam & bar. Children are split into ability based groups, so no previous experience necessary.

Gym stars for 9 and over.

All gymnasts must be able to perform a cartwheel, a handstand, splits and bridges before starting this class. Flic flacs, handsprings and somersaults are some of the skills we learn in this class.

    Junior Tumbling Class

These sessions are for boys and girls who want to concentrate on learning float cartwheels, round offs, walkovers, front handsprings and some flic flacks and side aerials. We don't use all bar or beam in this class, just the mats, inflatable tumble track and sometimes the mini tramp. Lots of gymnasts choose to do this class as well as a gym class.

    Senior Tumbling Class

We build up strength and flexibility to master aerials (no-handed cartwheels), round off flic flacks, whips, back saltos and heaps more. These classes are great for boys, cheerleaders and dancers who want to flip and tumble, this session is great for those wanting to do two classes week. Gymnasts are expected to stay for 15 min at the end of the session to pack away the equipment.

Assisted learning sessions are for 5 – 10 yr olds

These classes cater for children with a range of learning needs who would prefer smaller classes and the option of a parent or caregiver to go around with them. We will teach rolls, handstands, cartwheels and use the beam, trampoline and bar, teaching skills appropriate to each child and their ability. If you would like to come to try a class before you commit to a whole term, please contact us.

  • What to wear Open or Close

Gymnasts need to wear clothes with no buttons or zips. Clothes which are flexible and t-shirts that tuck in, no jeans and no skirts. Leotards and leggings are great. The club leotard and t-shirt are available to purchase for competitions, Santa parades and training. Long hair must be neatly tied up before coming to class.

No jewellery, it can cause serious injury to gymnasts, coaches and equipment. And bare feet, the floor is cold in winter, but it is also really slippery. We'd rather have cold feet than a head injury. During winter months, gymnasts need to wear warm clothes on top of their training gear. Track pants and a jumper.

Always bring a named plastic bottle of water to class please.

  • Club Rules Open or Close

Only enrolled members are allowed on the equipment and only during their scheduled session with their coach. No food to be eaten in the hall, this includes gum. Please be quiet when waiting for a class to start/finish, siblings are not allowed to run around causing a distraction.
By enrolling in a term of gymnastics you are agreeing to pay the whole term fees. Parents must enrol for each term.

  • Policies Open or Close

    Discounts policy:

We have a discount for families with more than one child doing gymnastics with us each term or if a child chooses to do more than one class a week.
    2 gymnasts each term = $20 discount
    3 gymnasts each term = $40 discount
To claim your discount, fees must be paid in full before the start of term, this discount does not apply to the tumble tots or home school classes.

Up to $30 Sport start funding is also available from Sport Tasman for people with a community services card who have children 5 years or older doing gymnastics, for more information see the Sport Tasman website for more info or contact Sarah info@tasmangymnasticsclub.co.nz

    Refund policy:

Refunds are given at the discretion of the committee. We ask that a letter and doctors note are given to the committee for consideration. The committee only meets four times a year, so there can be a bit of a wait sometimes.

    Inclusion Policy:

Tasman Gymnastics Club has an inclusion policy which means that wherever possible children with disabilities, whether physical or mental will be included into all our classes. We do offer two special needs sessions for children who would prefer a quieter class with smaller groups and a higher coach to gymnast ratio. Please see the timetable for more information.
